As you gather around the table with friends and loved ones, Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t have any teeth. Although you probably don’t think about your teeth very often, they are invaluable to your overall wellness and quality of life. Simple mistakes during the holidays can cause irreversible damage to your dental health. Thanksgiving doesn’t have to leave a lasting mark on your smile. Here are 5 tips to show your pearly whites a little appreciation.
1. Cut Back on Sugars and Starches
Sweet treats, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce are staples of the holidays, but they contain sugars and starches, which feed cavity-causing bacteria. Food residue combines with bacteria to create an acidic plaque that can slowly erode your enamel. Your enamel can’t grow back once it has been lost. No amount of brushing can reverse decay.
It’s best to moderate your consumption of starches and sugars. Instead, choose fresh vegetables. Not only are they loaded with nutrients, but they also act as scrub brushes for your teeth to keep them clean.
2. Avoid Stain-Causing Foods and Drinks
Pigments from foods and drinks can seep under your enamel because it’s porous. Red wine, coffee, balsamic vinegar, and cranberries can cause tooth discoloration.
If you can’t skip a warm cup of coffee or glass of wine, drink it through a straw to limit its contact with your teeth. Drink it all at once instead of sipping it. Brush your teeth after you finish.
3. Skip Alcohol
Alcohol is bad news for your smile. It can cause dehydration, which will make your mouth dry. This creates an ideal environment for oral bacteria growth that can lead to unpleasant odors, infections, and decay. It’s better to choose water whenever possible. You’ll stay hydrated and keep your mouth moist.
4. Commit to Brushing and Flossing
Although it’s a busy time of the year, don’t let your oral hygiene habits slip. If you’re snacking more often, brush your teeth after every meal for 2 minutes. Floss your teeth at least once per day. Finish your routine with an antimicrobial mouthwash.
5. Don’t Forget to Visit Your Dentist
Visit your dentist for your semi-annual cleaning and checkup. They’ll remove any plaque or tartar buildup to keep your smile healthy and looking its best. They will also look for anything concerning to ensure a minor issue doesn’t turn into a big problem during the holidays.
As you give thanks for the many blessings in your life, show your mouth a little gratitude. You’ll invest in a healthy mouth and body.
